The Great Alaskan Summers: Fun Hiking Trails, Hot Fishing Spots, and Camping Adventures Near Anchorage

There’s nothing quite like summer in Alaska—especially when you grew up here and know all the best spots. If you’ve ever wondered what to do with all that endless daylight, let me show you how locals make the most of it within a quick drive from Anchorage.

Girdwood: My All-Season Playground

First stop? Girdwood. This place is my go-to, whether I’m craving a killer cinnamon roll from The Bake Shop or looking for a trail to wander. Winner Creek Trail is a classic—lush, green, and you can even try your luck at gold panning (yes, really!). If you’re up for a view that’ll blow your mind, hop on the tram up Mt. Alyeska. Trust me, the view is worth every second.

Other Trails Worth the Trek

  • Flattop Mountain: If you want to see all of Anchorage and beyond, this is the hike for you. It’s a bit of a climb, but the payoff is huge.
  • Byron Glacier Trail: Super chill, family-friendly, and you end up at a glacier. Bring your camera!
  • Eagle River Nature Center: Tons of trails, lots of wildlife, and a good spot to just take it easy.

Fishing Spots Locals Love

  • Ship Creek: Right in Anchorage—grab your gear and catch salmon without leaving town.
  • Kenai River: It’s a bit of a drive, but if you want to land a big one, this is the place.
  • Bird Creek: Quick trip south, and you’re fishing for salmon with the locals.

Camping Under the Midnight Sun

  • Willow Creek State Recreation Area: Chill vibes, river access, and you might spot a moose or two.
  • Eklutna Lake Campground: Kayak, bike, or just hang out by the water. It’s peaceful and gorgeous.
  • Portage Valley: Glaciers, waterfalls, and campfires—what more could you want?

Keep It Safe, Keep It Fun

  • Bear spray is your friend. Keep it handy, just in case.
  • Weather’s wild here—layers and rain gear are a must.
  • With the sun up all night, it’s easy to lose track of time. Set an alarm if you want to catch some sleep!
  • Always let someone know where you’re headed, especially if you’re off exploring new spots.

So that’s how I do summer in Alaska—good food, great trails, fishing, and camping with friends. If you see me in Girdwood, say hi! There’s always something new to discover when the sun never really sets.
